Troubleshooting a Network Connection

Issue: Network speed or connection issues (Residence Halls and around campus)

Fixes:

  • Are you using eku_secure?  This is the preferred network and the one you should use.  Oftentimes trouble happens when someone is on eku_guest and something doesn’t work correctly.
  • Remove and re-add the network to your device
  • Be sure your computer operating system (e.g., Windows 11, macOS Catalina)
  • Restart your computer.  This sounds like a cliché but it works!
  • Is your Wi-Fi turned on?  Sometimes a laptop has a Wi-Fi button that can toggle the Wi-Fi on and off.  Be sure it isn’t toggled off.
  • Turn the Wi-Fi off and on again to connect to the closest Wi-Fi access point.
  • Turn off all personal Wi-Fi devices (e.g., wireless painter or access points) to be sure nothing is overloading the system.  Be sure that isn’t slowing the connection of your PC and others in your vicinity.  If you and your neighbor or roommates are experiencing problems and you all have wireless printers, try turning them off to reduce Wi-Fi congestion and noise.
  • Do you or your neighbor have a router or a signal booster/amplifier?  These are not allowed at EKU (residence halls or offices) because they interfere with everyone’s signals.
  • Are you using a file-sharing tool?  These can cause lag the network for everyone because they are developed to use as much bandwidth as possible.  You should disable it on your PC then restart to see if that helps.  NOTE: Do not share copyrighted materials because if you are caught, you will be fined!
  • Is your Wi-Fi adapter drivers up-to-date?
  • Are others around you also not connecting or getting a weak signal?  If none of these suggestions helped, contact IT:
